Several members of the First Bank Corp. Student Leadership Council (SLC) manned a hydration station along the route of the Fort Smith Marathon, which took place February 10. While weather was anything but pleasant this year, supporters were out in force to cheer on runners.
The students, along with Dr. Larry Faulk, braved the near-freezing temperature and rain to provide the 342 runners of the half-marathon with Gatorade, water, gel, and encouragement at the eighth mile of the 13.1-mile route.
This is the third year the group has supported the Fort Smith Marathon and those who run it.
Participating SLC members were:
- Claire Rose Latta and Ben Bagby of Fort Smith
- Parker Jennings of Marion
- Kristen Phillips of Muldrow, Okla.
- Gage Norris of Rudy
- Kendell Shropshire of Wister, Okla.
The students provided enthusiastic encouragement to all the runners but were especially excited when two SLC members, Stephanie Long of Springdale and Taylor Wewers of Van Buren, ran by the water station.
SLC President Gage Norris stated, “It was really great to see all of the runners achieve a goal they have been working towards for a very long time. I was surprised at how many runners asked for a Fireball.”
