Eureka Pizza’s Wilkin Headlined SLC Event

SLC Meeting in LattureMore than 400 students registered for the 5th annual Professional Development Day held February 23rd in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

The student-led event was organized by the First Bank Corp. Student Leadership Council (SLC). Dr. Larry Faulk, Associate Professor of Management, is the group’s faculty advisor.

Professional Development Day provides College of Business students the opportunity to learn about various business issues from community leaders and experts from a range of industries. The conference is designed to prepare students at every stage of their education journey for a business career.

SLC President, Christian Taggart, stated, “I think the event was the best we have ever had. The presentations were very informative and gave students the opportunity to hear about the ins and outs of the careers they hope to have someday. I am very proud of all the work done by the Student Leadership Council to make this happen.”

Ashok Subramanian, Dean of the College of Business, supported Taggert’s view, adding, “This is a great example of the willingness of our community leaders working with the College of Business and our students to provide opportunities such as this. I applaud Dr. Faulk and the SLC for putting together another great program”

The First Bank Corp. Scholars of Distinction Student Leadership Council serves as a liaison between the students, the administration, and the faculty of the College of Business (COB) by coordinating student activities and demonstrating student leadership within the COB.  It is the voice of the student body and has the responsibility of creating and implementing programs of value to all business students.

Rolf Wilkin, Founder and President of Eureka Pizza, kicked-off the event with a motivational discussion on the spirit that drives every business towards success.

Naomi Roundtree who has 22 years experience in Human Resources and is currently the Director of HR for the City of Fort Smith gave an informative presentation about the different job opportunities and type of work in HR.

Jill Rowland, Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch, and Larry Todd, Vice President-Investment Office for Wells Fargo, discussed how to get a finance career. They also addressed current economic issues that impact the field.

The accounting sessions covered public and corporate accounting with numerous speakers from companies such as ArcBest, Ernst Young, and Beall Barclay.

PDD was an excellent opportunity for students to gain knowledge outside of the classroom setting. According to surveys taken by the student body, students most appreciated the variety of sessions held and the knowledgeable speakers leading the individual sessions.
